Teaching English Program 2019
Hannah Smith has been MEET’s English Teaching Project Leader the past two years, although she has traveled with MEET numerous times prior to accepting this responsibility. She is doing a stellar job organizing her team before each trip, making the appropriate introductions, and supporting their efforts while in Can Tho.
The Medical Students at CTUMP truly look forward to opportunities to learn conversational English, and improve their vocabulary.
It is especially helpful when our Volunteers have knowledge of medical terminology, but certainly not required for a successful exchange.
Hannah has made a significant difference in the scheduling and organization for a positive experience for all. The December, 2019, team were engaged in day classes in coordination with Ms. Minh at CTUMP, as well as evening classes for Can Tho’s various English Clubs. The students at MESC hosted a Christmas themed event. Pictures are from classes, in front of the school and at dinner with the teachers.
I spoke with Hannah recently regarding their trip and she felt very good about both her teams experience and those of the students. There were 4 members of the English teaching team this past December trip, Hannah Smith, Earl Fenstermacher, and Hannah Fishbien, who have all been on previous trips to Can Tho with MEET. Jack Bennett was their new team member. Earl indicated to me that he had a wonderful trip, so I’m guessing he must have come back to the US with many more Facebook friends. They were kept busy during the day and in the evenings as well as they chose.
It has been a bit of an oversight in years past to not give more recognition to our MEET English teaching delegation. The Medical Students and faculty value the week they spend with our Volunteers. They learn together, have fun, and a true cultural exchange occurs. Many thanks to the team, and a special note of MEET’s gratitude for the leadership that Hannah Smith has assumed.
