Educational exchanges have continued for MEET
Despite 2020 travel restrictions this past year, through a variety of media and internet programs, Educational exchanges have continued for MEET. Some of the MEET/UW activities have been featured on our website, but also of note:
Dr. Ian Bennett, MD PhD, a Professor at the University of Washington (UW) has traveled with the multidisciplinary teams of MEET/UW on past education exchanges, and provided consultation and teaching opportunities in the areas of his expertise at several Can Tho institutions. He was recently awarded a two year grant from the US NIH (National Institutes of Health) to address perinatal depression, an often overlooked health concern, that may impact women and families in South Vietnam. CTUMP faculty, led by Dr. Pham Ti Tam, MD and UW physicians/scientists, with Dr. Bennett as lead investigator. Psychiatry and Social Work professionals are additionally continuing their educational exchanges in Can Tho. Please look for regular updates. under Mental Health.
Drs. Tam Dinh, LCSW, PhD and Jill Cole, DSW, LCSW, and Helen Sikov, MSW, LNHA, MEET Project Leader have had several exchanges with Can Tho Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital (CTGOH). Tam, Jill and Helen have taken many trips with MEET and have taught in both the university and hospital settings (See Mental Health/SW). The primary contact at CTGOH is Hong Quan Nguyen, Director of Social Work. He has ten Social Workers on his team, and their job descriptions include micro, mezzo, and macro responsibilities. They work seven days a week. All parties have been very committed to working together, with CTGOH staff using their Saturday AM’s for education and to further professional SW practice within their hospital. The SW team looks forward to resuming education with CTGOH after the Tet holiday.
Dr. Kathleen Meyers, MD is a Child Psychiatrist who has also traveled with MEET/UW numerous times. She traveled as a UW clinician and instructor, having spent many years at UW Children’s Hospital in Seattle. Kathleen has been conducting virtual lectures, with professionals from several countries this past year She was asked to write a chapter on Telepsychiatry, for a textbook by the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and Associated Professionals and to include an international perspective. Dr. Thang, MD from CT Pediatric Hospital and Dr. Dat NguyenTam, MD from CTUMP have collaborated in this effort.
Most of our Volunteers would prefer that our exchanges to be more interactive and in person, but attempts are being made by so many dedicated volunteers to stay connected.
