April 2021 Palliative Care Training for Nurses held in Tra Vinh University (4th Class)

The MEET Hospice Program continues to make great strides in Palliative Care education in Vietnam. Anh Ly has been especially helpful in sharing pictures with us, and leading this important educational advancement in care. The MEET Hospice Program is grateful for the substantial support financially by the Estate of Sandy Appell.

During April 12-20, 2021 the Second Class of Palliative Care Training for nurses was held at Can Tho Oncology Hospital (CTOH). There were four Head Nurses from four different wards at the hospital who attended. Most of the nurses were young, well educated and had a great deal of interest in learning new approaches to care.

The class had an opportunity to evaluate the course, and there was a 100%  approval rate for effectiveness, and 13% would have liked more time for the coursework.

Additionally, CTOH BOD is writing the program of Palliative Care in Home Care, and plan to submit their plan to Medical Affairs in June, 2021, with potential classes to commence in October, 2021.

The next planned classes for nurses in Palliative Care education will be at Ca Mau General Hospital, Tien Giang General Hospital, and a discussion is intended with Danang Oncology Hospital.

It is exciting to learn that there are negotiations underway to resume physician training to support the Hospice/Palliative Care Program. Anh and her trainers have been conducting classes with nurses primarily, but physician training via Zoom initially, and hopefully in person training when MEET travel resumes will add to this important educational effort.
