Great Progress in Palliative Care Training in Can Tho

Recognizing the need to train nurses with the ability to visit patient's homes to teach family members how to best care for their ailing family members, we began to develop a training program.

With the extraordinary leadership of Phuong Anh and two very experienced palliative care nurse educators, the educational materials (167 page textbook) were developed. Hoang Thi Mong Huyen collaborated closely with Anh to produce the Hospice teaching materials. Hoang is employed at the Oncology Hospital in HCMC, but has taught with MEET in Can Tho many times in the past. She was recently the key facilitator for Hospice nurse instruction at Can Tho Medical College, along with two nurse colleagues from HCMC.

We were able to get the leadership of the Can Tho Medical College (CMC) and the Can Tho Oncology Hospital (CTOH) enthusiastically engaged in the program and the first class at CMC has just graduated and the CTOH course will begin in October!

We hope to see these nurses being part of a home visiting program and ultimately a hospice program that would be integral to the Mekong Region service delivery model.

We'll keep you informed of our progress.
