Social Work Visit 10/28-10/31 2020 Can Tho and HCMC
Huong Hoang, MSW, LCSW and Minh Ha Nguyen, MSW, LCSW represented the Social Work (SW) team in Vietnam in the Fall of 2019. Minh Ha indicated that “ it was an honor and pleasure” to meet so many hospital and university representatives during their brief visit. “From the directors, doctors, nurses and other staff, everyone impressed us with their dedication to serve and strong commitment to Social Work.”
MEET Psychiatry Visit December 2019
Dr. Richard Veith, MD represented the Psychiatry team In Can Tho in December 2019. He was a very important contributor from the US to the Can Tho University Medical and Pharmacy (CTUMP) 40th Anniversary and International Scientific Conference (ISC). Dr. Veith was accompanied by Dr. Ian Bennett, MD, PhD, who collaborated on mental health presentations as well as making his own contributions to Family Medicine sessions. Dr. Bennett received a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to work with CTUMP Department of Public Health to develop an implementation model for the management of perinatal depression and reduce the risk of perinatal suicide in several communes in the Can Tho region.

Highlights from the 2019 December Trip
This was another exciting and productive trip, especially since it coincided with the grand celebration of the 40th anniversary of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (CTUMP). Drs. Gertler, Appell, Vesselle, and Veith were honored during the opening ceremonies of the 40th Anniversary International Scientific Conference as recipients of a Certificate of Merit for their contributions to CTUMP over the years.

Social Work and Psychiatry disciplines were well represented on 2019 education exchanges to Can Tho. The Social Work Team in April consisted of Dr. Jill Cole, DSW, (Jill), Gail Watts, MSW (Gail), Helen Sikov, MSW LNHA, Project Leader, (Helen), and Dr. Tam Dinh, PhD, LCSW (Tam), who was new to our team this year. Dr. Richard Veith, MD, Project Leader (Richard), Dr. Kathleen Meyer, MD (Kathleen), and Aditi Sharma, MD (Aditi), represented the field of Psychiatry.

Mental Health/ Social Work April 2019 Update
It was such an exciting trip as Project Leader for MEET Social Work (SW) and Mental Health this past April in Can Tho, Vietnam. Our MEET team worked closely with UW Psychiatry/Mental Health on several occasions, and I am confident that together we demonstrated the importance of collaboration among our growing partnerships.
Mental Health/ Social Work November 2018 Update
The interest in Mental Health/Social Work education continues to grow in Vietnam, and learning exchanges in Can Tho are increasing for our MEET team. During our November 2018 visit our Can Tho Psychiatry delegates, Kathleen Myers, MD and Aditi Sharma, MD continued their efforts at Can Tho Children’s Hospital by providing experiences and knowledge in the area of Autism.
Social Work Huge Impact - Continue to Support Us
The MEET Social Work (SW) Team will be returning strong again to Vietnam in April, 2019. Our delegation, in just a few short years, is making a huge impact in a profession that has been silent for many generations in Vietnam, especially in the area of Medical SW, and in the S. Vietnam.
There are many qualified Social Workers who have expressed a desire for a place on our team, but are unable to fully afford our MEET All Volunteer delegation. Some of our interested Volunteers are willing to serve as Translators, so vital to ensure our communications are optimal when consulting or teaching students or medical staff. There are others who are willing to travel with MEET to share their knowledge and experience working in the field of Mental Health/Social Work in both the classroom or as a consultant, but cannot fully afford the costs for travel.
